I have been a fan of Peter Falk’s for what seems like my entire life. I don’t think I can even single out the first moment he caught my eye. I do, however, remember showing up to Law & Society class in high school with a rumpled Columbo-esque raincoat of my own. Always forgetting which pocket I had my homework in before pulling it out in a crumbled mess and offering it to Mr. Palley , who as I recall looked as though he wished he was anywhere else, at that time, than right there. I would then give him my best lazy/glass eyed look and request to go to the bathroom but not before asking if I could have my parking slip ‘validated’. I watched Columbo with a fever from then on. Even now I break out my Columbo episodes (of which I have everyone) and with that same fever I am still glued to my seat to this day. One of my favorite Movies of all time is ‘Murder By Death’ where he plays the type of role he was born for, the hardnosed, yet tongue in cheek detective Sam Diamond.
This next clip takes place on ‘The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts’ the Man Of The Hour being none other than The Chairman Of The Board himself Frank Sinatra. Peter walks in and in Columbo character ad-libs a routine that shows just how brilliant this man truly was and he does without breaking up or missing a single beat.
I will miss this man. The world was made better with him being in it.
